چکیده

This contribution provides an analysis of the basic coordination tendencies of manganese with specific emphasis on the biological chemistry of this element. The review is broken into four parts. First, a discussion of the basic coordination chemistry o f manganese is mononuclear and multinuclear environments is prescnted. Second, the biophysical data essential to the development of models for the active center of the photosystem is examined. Third, recently reported mononuclear and cluster manganese compounds are profiled with an emphasis on relating the physical parameters of the models to the structure and function of the enzymatic system. Finally, a comparison is made between the OEC and other known manganoenzymes which metabolize the 0; moiety.

Two-dimensional Manganese(II) Coordination Polymer Complex Containing Aqua, Diethyl Phosphate and Chloride Ligands: Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, Thermal Analyses, and Crystal Structure

A new two-dimensional manganese(II) coordination polymer, [Mn(μ-DEP)(μ-Cl)(H2O)2]n (1) (DEP is diethyl phosphate), was prepared from the reaction of MnCl2.4H2O and TEP (TEP is triethyl phosphate) ligand in mixture of H2O/CH3OH (1:10) at 40 °C. Suitable crystals of this complex for crystal structure determination were obtained by slow evaporation of the produced colorless solution at room temper...

High-spin Mn-oxo complexes and their relevance to the oxygen-evolving complex within photosystem II.

The structural and electronic properties of a series of manganese complexes with terminal oxido ligands are described. The complexes span three different oxidation states at the manganese center (III-V), have similar molecular structures, and contain intramolecular hydrogen-bonding networks surrounding the Mn-oxo unit. Structural studies using X-ray absorption methods indicated that each comple...

Analysis of the radiation-damage-free X-ray structure of photosystem II in light of EXAFS and QM/MM data.

A recent femtosecond X-ray diffraction study produced the first high-resolution structural model of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II that is free of radiation-induced manganese reduction (Protein Data Bank entries 4UB6 and 4UB8 ). We find, however, that the model does not match extended X-ray absorption fine structure and QM/MM data for the S1 state. This is attributed to uncertain...

Using small molecule complexes to elucidate features of photosynthetic water oxidation.

The molecular oxygen produced in photosynthesis is generated via water oxidation at a manganese-calcium cluster called the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC). While studies in biophysics, biochemistry, and structural and molecular biology are well known to provide deeper insight into the structure and workings of this system, it is often less appreciated that biomimetic modelling provides the founda...

Oxygen-atom transfer chemistry and thermolytic properties of a di-tert-butylphosphate-ligated Mn4O4 cubane.

[Mn4O4{O2P(OtBu)2}6] (1), an Mn4O4 cubane complex combining the structural inspiration of the photosystem II oxygen-evolving complex with thermolytic precursor ligands, was synthesized and fully characterized. Core oxygen atoms within complex 1 are transferred upon reaction with an oxygen-atom acceptor (PEt3), to give the butterfly complex [Mn4O2{O2P(OtBu)2}6(OPEt3)2]. The cubane structure is r...
